The World's Second Sphere Is Coming to Abu Dhabi. Yas Island Is Getting a Sphere.

The World's Second Sphere Is Coming to Abu Dhabi. Yas Island Is Getting a Sphere.

If you've been to Las Vegas in the last two years, you've seen it. If you haven't, you've definitely seen it on someone's Instagram. The Sphere - that enormous glowing orb sitting just off the Strip - has become one of those buildings that people travel specifically to look at.

And now it's coming to Yas Island.

On May 14, 2026, DCT Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment officially confirmed the location: Sphere Abu Dhabi will be built between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, with a $1.7 billion construction budget and a target opening date of the end of 2029. It will be the first Sphere venue outside the United States.

What Las Vegas Built

The Sphere opened in September 2023 with a U2 residency. At 366 feet tall, it's the largest spherical structure ever built. But the scale is almost beside the point.

Inside, the screen wraps completely around you. The resolution is so high that your brain stops processing it as a screen and starts processing it as a place. Filmmakers like Darren Aronofsky have made productions specifically designed for it. The seats vibrate. There are wind effects, temperature shifts, and scent machines. Every sense is involved, which sounds like a gimmick until you're inside and realise your body genuinely doesn't know where it is.

The sound system is almost entirely hidden behind an acoustically transparent LED screen - 99% invisible. Different sections of the audience can hear completely different things at the same time: different mixes, different languages. The engineering behind this alone took years.

Outside, the Exosphere - the building's LED exterior - covers 580,000 square feet and is visible for miles. When it first lit up on July 4th 2023, it showed the words "Hello World," then a giant blinking eyeball scanning the horizon. Within hours, the footage had circled the globe.

The Timothée Moment

There's one event that captured what the Sphere can do as a cultural object and it happened in December 2025.

Timothée Chalamet, promoting his A24 film Marty Supreme (directed by Josh Safdie, in which he plays a ping pong champion), became the first person ever to stand on top of the Las Vegas Sphere. He shouted the film's name into the sky while the entire exterior transformed into a giant orange ping pong ball beneath his feet. The stunt was his own idea, executed in partnership with A24, Sphere Studios, and Cash App. Jimmy Fallon called it one of the best film marketing campaigns he'd ever seen.

The point is that the Sphere has become the kind of landmark that changes the meaning of whatever happens near it. Standing on top of it made global news.

What Abu Dhabi's Version Will Be

Sphere Abu Dhabi won't replicate Las Vegas. The programming will reflect Abu Dhabi's position as a cultural crossroads - Emirati artists will have their work displayed on the Exosphere, and original immersive experiences rooted in Emirati culture and heritage are planned alongside international concert residencies, sporting events, and brand activations.

Yas Island already draws 34 million visitors a year. Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and the Yas Marina F1 circuit are all within minutes of where the Sphere will stand. A Disney theme park - the seventh Disney resort in the world and the first in the Middle East - is confirmed for the island too.

Every year during the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Sphere will appear in the background of a global broadcast watched by hundreds of millions of people. James Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, described Abu Dhabi as "the first step in realising our vision for a global network of venues."

Worth Paying Attention To

The Sphere is an unusual kind of building. It doesn't fit neatly into any existing category - it is not a stadium, not a cinema, not a concert hall, not a theme park. What it does is create experiences that are only possible inside it, and an exterior that functions as a public spectacle regardless of what's happening within.

Yas Island in 2029 will look very different from Yas Island today. The Sphere will be part of that - visible from the highway, during the Grand Prix, from across the water.
